$7.50 in Campbell's coupons

The folks at Campbells have some great high value coupons worth up to $7.50 available on their website here. Coupons include $1 off two Campbells for cooking soups. I regularly find these on sale for $1 a can, which brings the total to 50 cents a can.

Here's a recipe for Tater Tot Casserole that uses the Cream of Mushroom condensed soup that my whole family loves:

1 pound ground beef, browned
16 oz. sour cream
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 can French cut green beans, drained
1 bag tater tots
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix together beef, sour cream, soup, cheese and beans. Spray a baking pan with cooking spray. Spread frozen tater tots in the bottom of the pan. Top with beef mixture. Bake until bubbly and cooked through, about an hour.

$38 in coupons for cold, vitamins, etc.

I don't know about your family, but we're dead in the middle of spring cold season here. I'm not sure who came down with it first -- my youngest or me. But now my fiance has it too.

So these coupons are already coming in handy for the aches and pains that come along with the sneezing and watery eyes.

Go here to the Wyeth web site for more than 20 coupons worth up to $38 total.

Two great deals, $20+ in coupons, from Kmart

Here's one to bookmark and keep handy for the next few months: a coupon for $10 off your next $20 purchase at Kmart. Or better yet, download the pdf onto your machine so you can continue to print it out if it disappears.

While it appears you can print this one as many times as you want, however you can only use one coupon per transaction. Of course, it's not below me to go through the line several times to make several transactions. The coupon is good until May 22.

Now, there are some restrictions. You can't use it on "Buy one, get one" events; non-merchandise; concessions; federal or state regulated items; alcohol; tobacco; fuel; items behind the pharmacy counter; prescriptions; prior purchases; partial-paid special order items; Lands' End; Two Hearts Maternity; Sears merchandise rung on Sears registers within Kmart and some other legal mumbo jumbo. That said, I think there is plenty of the store that qualifies.

If you're a regular Kmart shopper, you may also want to consider singing up for Kmart's email savings club here, which promises to send you email deals several times a week, starting with two coupons for $5 off a $50 purchase.

Lessons learned: Month One

When you go on a diet, the experts always recommend you keep a food diary, writing down everything you each day to look for trends, and places where you can eliminate things.

Since I'm hoping to put our grocery bill on a diet, I decided to do the same with the foods I buy for this family of nine, keeping every single receipt for the month of February.

To be honest, I actually started my project in mid-January by cleaning out the pantry. First I got rid of stuff that I was not likely to use. I checked expiration dates, threw out packages that had tiny bits left in the bottom and made the executive decision that anything that had moved twice was making a final move to the trash. I focused my meals for the end of the month on using up whatever was left, and by Feb. 1 the cupboard (and the freezer) was bare.

And now, here we are a month later. I've been to the grocery store 19 times (11 times to Food Lion for quick things and 8 times to Giant for the larger lists) and purchased 406 items. While I always kept an eye out for sale items, this was the first time I really used coupons. And I will admit, there were times when I could have done that better. But that said, here's some of what I learned from my one-month experiment:

Value of groceries purchased: $1,135
Actual amount spent: $815
Total savings (coupons and in-store deals): $320
Percentage saved: 28 percent
Total spent on meat: $130

I have to stop there, because I think that number is a bit deceiving.

This is a family of eight meat eaters, and I typically prepare about two pounds of meat for each dinner. All of the meat I purchase is of the pink sticker variety -- meats being sold at a deep discount (I rarely buy if it isn't at least 50 percent off) because they are about to expire. I bring it home and either cook it that night, or repackage it and freeze it. But since it's been repriced, the original price does not show on the receipt and the value is not reflected in the total value of groceries I purchased in February (I estimate that would bring the total value up to about $1,300).

Other things I learned:

Boxes of cereal: 19 (luckily you can always find cereal coupons, and while my kids do have favorites, they will eat pretty much whatever I bring home).

Crackers: 13 boxes (here again, they have favorites, but will eat anything. So anytime I see a cracker on sale that I also have a coupon for, I snatch them up).

Chips/pretzels: 7 bags

Pancake mix: 4 boxes

Gallons of milk: 30
It costs me $3.89 a gallon at Giant and $3.69 a gallon at Food Lion. But I can get the same gallon for a savings of $1 or more if I buy it at BJs. Now, BJs is about a 20 minute drive, whereas I can walk to the Giant and Food Lion. But we go through milk so fast, and we will soon have a spare 'fridge in the garage. So I think it will be worth my time to go to BJs once a week and buy milk for the week. I wouldn't do that to save a few pennies. But that little effort four times a month will save me about $350 a year.

Laundry detergent: 1 96-load bottle ($10)
I do two to three loads a day, and we do go through a bottle of this stuff a month. Since it's such a high ticket item, it was one place I looked to see if there was some way to spend less cleaning our clothes. And I found one. About two weeks ago, I experimented with making my own laundry soap. For about $3.50 I could make enough powdered soap to do the same number of loads, saving me $6.50 a month. I quietly started using my homemade soap two weeks ago, and since the clothes are clean and no one noticed, I figure I received the seal of approval.
Want to try it yourself? It's simple:
3 bars of Ivory (or other mild) soap, grated on a fine grater
3 cups 12 Team Borax
3 cups Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
Place in a heavy sealed container and shake to mix well.
Use 2 T per load

I'm going to keep looking at what we spend. And am hoping to do even better in March. I'll use more coupons. I'll find new ways to cut back. It's already looking good: so far this month I've saved more than 36 percent of my overall food bill thanks to coupons and in-store deals, up from 28 percent in February.

Happy coupon day!!

It's the first day of the month -- the day the online coupon folks post the new coupons for the month.

For me, it's also the day I go through a reorganize my coupon organizer, culling out any coupons that have expired, put those that are about to expire on the top of the pile and adding the any new coupons for the month to my collection.

You can find links to the largest and most popular online coupon sites right here on the right hand side of the main page of this blog. Some of my favorites for this month: $1 off two Progresso products (and their panko crumbs are on sale for $2 each at my local Giant), 75 cents off Gold Medal flour (one you don't see very often), and $1 off two Hillshire Farms lunchmeats (on sale for $3.33 for each 1/2-lb. package).

More than $100 in Target coupons

When my fiance and I put our family of nine together, we both moved to what's kindly called "Lower-Slower Delaware." And I must say, there are lots of things to like about living in a town with a population of just 259 (er, make that 268 now, eh?) there are one or two things I miss.

I must admit, one of those is my Target. In fact, I miss it so much that when I travel, I often schedule to hit the Target in the place we are visiting.

I hope I can do that before the $115 in store coupons Target just released (available here) expires. These are good, high value coupons, most worth $1 or more, for grocery products I use every day: including crackers, snacks, cheese, pizza and other items. You should be able to stack these store coupons with manufacturers coupons, but if you have any problems, you can refer to the store's coupon policy, posted online here.

I wanted to be sure to share these in case you had a Target closer to where you live. You can find your closest store here.

Nearly $3 in Pepperidge Farm coupons!

I love Pepperidge Farm products! But I often pass them by because I can buy other products for less money. Which is why I had to share these coupons for a total of $2.85 off Goldfish crackers, bread, puff pastry and Tam Tam cookies.

Go here to sign up and print out your coupons. I was able to print each coupon twice.

Still, I'm going to have to hide the cinnamon raisin bread so that mom and dad can get some toast in the morning. Because otherwise, it'll all be gone long before we get up for breakfast.

FREE meal planner -- and COUPONS!

Mueller's, the pasta people, are giving away a free 12-month weekly meal planner, which includes about a dozen coupons for Mueller's products, along with recipes and meal ideas.

Go here to sign up to get yours, which Mueller's promise to deliver to your mailbox "soon."

$17 for free

Of course, the $17 coupon book from ConAgra foods is only valuable if it's for things you would buy anyway (thanks for the advice Dad). Since I'm new to all this, I won't know for six to eight weeks when it arrives in the mail, but ConAgra does include labels I use regularly -- Pam, Hunts, Orville Redenbachers, Chef Boyardee.

Wanna find out for yourself? Go to Walmart's web site here and sign up for a booklet of your own. It'll arrive via snail mail eventually.
